Yesterday’s Year of Firsts was a trip down memory lane. Since I heard that Kiernan Shipka is set to star in the new Sabrina the Teenage Witch series, I’ve been thinking about how I haven’t watched the Melissa Joan Hart version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
I did a little digging and found out that there were seven seasons of the “old” Sabrina series. Seven! Who knew? Certainly not me. It was on during the late 90s early 2000s and apparently part of the TGIF lineup, which is probably why I never saw it.
Back in the day when I was still in school, I would come home and watch tv until my parents came home from work. Their coming home was the signal that I was to do my homework and my parents typically watched the news. We were a two TV household, but our other TV had limited channels. So yeah, if it wasn’t on in the afternoon, I probably didn’t see it.
Lucky for me Amazon has all seven seasons. Watching it reminded me of the questionable fashion choices of that era and also makes me wonder what we’ll look back on in 10-20 years and say about our fashion choices now.
I’m glad that I didn’t watch this show as a kid though, because aside from Sabrina’s Quizmaster, it took like, what… Four seasons to have a regular cast member that’s a person of colour. That really gets to me, not that this show is any different than any other of the TGIF shows. Aside from that, there are so many blondes on the show. I wish I was good with numbers because then I’d throw down the statistics of airtime given to blondes, as opposed to any other hair colour. It’s all blondes, all the time. (I don’t have a problem with blondes, my mama was a blonde in her day, but the rest of us dark-haired people exist too!)
And why do cast members suddenly disappear and get replaced so easily? What happened to Jenny? One season she’s there, the next she’s gone and no one mentions her at all? Poor Jenny.
This show really makes me wish I had super powers. Sure all of Sabrina’s spells tend to backfire on her, but the ability to travel across the world in a second or freeze time is definitely something I could get used to. My favourite part of the show has to be the guest appearances of ‘N Sync and Britney Spears. It really takes me back to a different time.
And it’s so weird to think of how much they’ve changed since their episodes aired. It gets me thinking about how much I’ve changed in the past 18 years. I wouldn’t say I’m a completely different person now than I was then, but I’ve certainly evolved.
Peace and Pistachios,
