CAIR Questions How Islamophobe Ben Carson Will Treat Muslims Served and Employed by HUD

CAIR Questions How Islamophobe Ben Carson Will Treat Muslims Served and Employed by HUD

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/5/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Islamophobe Ben Carson to be secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) could negatively impact Muslims served and employed by that federal agency.

Carson is notorious for his assertion that a Muslim should not be elected president of the United States. CAIR called on Carson to drop out of the presidential race when he made that bigoted statement.

“Based on his past Islamophobic statements and policy positions, all Americans should be very concerned on how Dr. Carson would treat Muslim HUD employees or Muslims seeking agency services,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.

“Dr. Carson’s views on Islam, American Muslims and the world are dangerously ill-informed and could negatively impact any government agency he heads,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

CAIR has expressed concern about a “troubling Islamophobic trend” in President-elect Donald Trump’s recent appointments and nominations.

Backgrounder on Ben Carson’s Islamophobia:

Earlier this year, in an interview with another Trump appointee, then Breitbart host Stephen Bannon, Carson said American Muslims could only embrace both Islamic and democratic values “if they’re schizophrenic.” He said: “I don’t see how they can do it otherwise, because you have two different philosophies.”

During a speech at Iowa University, Carson said Islam is not a religion, but is instead “a life organization system” that has an “apocalyptic vision.”

SEE: Ben Carson Says Islam Is Not a Religion But a “Life Organization System”

In September of 2015, CAIR announced the distribution of free Qurans, Islam’s holy text, in response to then Republican presidential candidate Carson’s false claim that Islam is “inconsistent” with the Constitution and his bigoted belief that a Muslim should not be elected president. Carson used the Anti-Semitic “dual loyalty” accusation to support his unconstitutional viewpoint.

Also last year, CAIR called on the Republican National Committee (RNC) to repudiate Carson’s stated willingness to consider religion as probable cause for searches and called on Carson himself to drop a top foreign policy adviser who claims Muslims have “infiltrated” the United States.

SEE: CAIR Calls on RNC to Repudiate Ben Carson’s Statement on Faith-Based Surveillance

Carson has compared Syrian refugees to “rabid dogs.” He said: “If there is a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog. And you’re probably going to put your children out of the way.”

CAIR Urges Trump to Drop Anti-Islam Conspiracy Theorist Frank Gaffney from Transition Team

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAIR Urges Trump to Drop Anti-Islam Conspiracy Theorist Frank Gaffney from Transition Team

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/16/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President-Elect Donald Trump to drop anti-Islam conspiracy theorist Frank Gaffney as an adviser on national security for his transition team. (#DropGaffney)

SEE: Meet Frank Gaffney, the Anti-Muslim Gadfly Reportedly Advising Trump’s Transition Team (Washington Post)

Donald Trump Considers Another Anti-Muslim Conspiracy Theorist for His Team

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has identified Gaffney as an anti-Muslim extremist and his Center for Security Policy (CSP) as a hate group. According to the SPLC, CSP is “a conspiracy-oriented mouthpiece for the growing anti-Muslim movement in the United States.”

Of Gaffney himself, the SPLC says he is “gripped by paranoid fantasies about Muslims destroying the West from within, suspicious that Barack Obama was actually born in Kenya, and a proponent of a new version of the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee to root out suspected Muslim subversives.”

SPLC: Frank Gaffney

“Discredited conspiracy theorists like Frank Gaffney should not come within 100 miles of any administration that seeks to maintain credibility on the world stage or to uphold longstanding American values of religious diversity and inclusion,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “With these kinds of associations, President-elect Trump is dividing America at a time when we are most in need of unity.”

Backgrounder on Frank Gaffney:

Gaffney is a notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist who has claimed that “most of the Muslim-American groups of any prominence in America are now known to be, as a matter of fact, hostile to the United States and its Constitution.”

He is a key promoter of the bizarre conspiracy theory that Muslims in public service are infiltrating the government on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Gaffney has questioned “whether Mr. Obama is a natural born citizen of the United States,” claimed the Missile Defense Agency logo is part of a “worrying pattern of official U.S. submission to Islam,” claimed an aide to Hillary Clinton was a secret Muslim Brotherhood operative, was a key witness for the plaintiffs in a controversial lawsuit seeking to block construction of a Tennessee mosque, promoted the debunked claim that Dearborn, Mich., is a “ghetto enclave in which it’s Muslim-only,” and hosted “white supremacist” Jared Taylor on his “Secure Freedom” radio program.

He has in the past:

* Suggested that Saddam Hussein was behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

* Claimed Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, was submitting to Islamic law when he condemned the burning of a Quran by a Florida pastor.

* Objected to Reps. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Andre Carson (D-Ind.) serving on the House Intelligence Committee because they are Muslim.

* Accused Pope Francis of having “rabidly anti-American” views after the pope said it is “not Christian” to urge the deportation of undocumented immigrants and to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

Gaffney was banned from the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in 2011 after accusing fellow Republicans of having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Anders Breivik, the Norwegian mass murderer, cited Gaffney in his anti-Muslim manifesto.

Gaffney’s staff attorney, David Yerushalmi, has advocated outlawing the practice of Islam in America and is the key promoter of anti-Islam bills in state legislatures nationwide.

When leading GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump proposed a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, he quoted from a sham survey commissioned by Gaffney’s organization.

Earlier this week, CAIR decried the appointment of anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist and White nationalist “alt-right” extremist Stephen Bannon as chief strategist and senior counselor to President-elect Donald Trump.

Bannon hosted Gaffney on his Sirius XM radio show “Breitbart News Daily” 29 times.

CAIR Says FBI Report of Sharp Jump in Anti-Muslim Hate Crimes Should Push Nation’s Leaders to Reject Islamophobia

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/14/16) – The Council on American-Islamic-Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said that newly-released FBI hate crime statistics showing a 67 percent jump in anti-Muslim incidents in 2015 should push the nation’s leaders to repudiate growing Islamophobia.

SEE: Hate Crimes Against Muslims Up by 67% Last Year

“We witnessed a sharp jump in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide last year, with that spike in Islamophobia continuing through 2016 and accelerating after the November 8 election,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “This unprecedented increase in bigotry of all kinds must be repudiated in the strongest terms possible by all our nation’s leaders, beginning with President-elect Donald Trump.”

McCaw noted that the FBI statistics confirm CAIR’s own report of an unprecedented number of anti-mosque incidents in 2015.

CAIR ACTION ALERT:

Tell Lawmakers to Reject Two ‘Reckless’ Bills Moving in Congress After Paris Attacks

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/20/15)
– The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling on all Americans to contact their elected representatives in Congress and urge them to reject two reckless bills, whose sponsors are taking advantage of public fears following the recent ISIS terrorist attacks in Paris.

TAKE ACTION: Contact Congress Today

Tell the Senate to Reject the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act of 2015 (H.R. 4038)

Also referred to as the American SAFE Act of 2015, the measure was sent to the Senate yesterday by the House in a veto-proof majority vote, 289-137, despite the White House’s threat to reject the measure. The act would effectively halt President Obama’s plan to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees.

The act requires the heads of the DHS, FBI and Director of National Intelligence to individually certify that every Syrian and Iraqi refugee being resettled inside the United States does not pose a threat.

CAIR opposes the act because no top agency official would ever submit themselves to such a certification process or take personal responsibly for the actions of every refugee resettled in the United States over the course of their lifetimes.

The measure’s burdensome review process would also “halt” the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees as new screening and approval programs would have to be established to comply with the act.

CAIR believes that Syrian refugees are the first victims of ISIS’s terrorism and should not be made to suffer any more delays in their perilous journey to find shelter and safety.

Tell the House to Reject the Deeply-Flawed Countering Violent Extremism Act of 2015 (H.R. 2899)

Also referred to as the CVE Act of 2015, this deeply-flawed act was approved by the House Homeland Security Committee in July but not referred to be scheduled for a vote until a week after the Paris attacks. It is expected that the act will soon be assigned a date to be debated and voted on the House floor.

If adopted, the legislation would create a new assistant secretary position in DHS and provide $40 million spread over four years to fund an Office for Countering Violent Extremism.

In July, CAIR joined 41 groups raising concerns about the act contained in a letter led by the Brennan Center for Justice, noting that “despite years of experience with CVE programming in the U.S. and abroad, there is no evidentiary basis for concluding that these programs contribute to reducing terrorism.”

CAIR believes that expanding government and throwing taxpayer dollars into an unproven program is not a solution Americans should support.

CAIR Says Nation’s Leaders Must Repudiate Islamophobia After Spike in Anti-Muslim Incidents

Shots fired at Conn. mosque, Okla. man shot after threatening Muslims, N.C. Uber driver hit after being asked if he is Muslim, ‘Middle Eastern’ passengers removed from flight

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/17/15) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, called on the nation’s political and religious leaders to repudiate Islamophobia in the wake of a spike in anti-Muslim incidents following the Paris terror attacks.

“The mainstreaming of Islamophobia by a number of our nation’s political and religious leaders has encouraged the latest hate-filled actions of anti-Muslim bigots,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Now is the time for those leaders who are concerned about traditional American values of religious inclusion and tolerance to speak out against Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate crime.”

CAIR Asks FBI to Probe Paris-Related Vandalism Targeting Nebraska Mosque

Same mosque has been targeted by vandals three times in four-month period

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/16/15) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the FBI and local police to investigate vandalism related to the recent terror attacks in Paris targeting a Nebraska mosque as a possible hate crime.

Officials with the Islamic Center in Omaha told CAIR that someone spray-painted graffiti of an Eiffel Tower peace symbol, which is being used online as a sign of solidarity with those impacted by the attacks, on an outside wall of the mosque.

CAIR said this is the third time the mosque has been targeted by vandalism in the past four month.

Earlier this month, CAIR made a similar request for a hate crime probe after a vandal was caught on surveillance camera attempting to break a glass door at mosque.

In August, CAIR called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the first act of vandalism as a possible hate crime.

SEE: CAIR Asks FBI to Probe 2nd Vandalism Targeting Nebraska Mosque

“The FBI and local law enforcement authorities should investigate the possible bias motive for this vandalism and allocate whatever resources are necessary to bring the perpetrator to justice,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

CAIR has recently responded to vandalism, threats and hate targeting mosques in Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, Nebraska, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, and other states.

Yesterday, CAIR thanked the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for its prompt investigation of phoned terror threats to mosques in Florida and called for hate crime charges to be brought against the alleged perpetrator. CAIR’s news release on the mosque threats also outlined the many condemnations of the Paris attacks by American Muslims.

These incidents fit a pattern of increased hate-motivated crimes and bias incidents nationwide targeting persons and property associated, or perceived to be associated, with Islam and the American Muslim community.

CAIR is urging community leaders to obtain and implement safety measures outlined in its booklet, “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety.” The booklet may be requested through CAIR’s website: http://www.cair.com/mosque-safety-guide.html

Feed the Hungry, Visit the Sick and Set Free the Captives

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Feed the hungry, visit the sick and set free the captives.” Sahih Al-Bukhari

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “(God) will (question a person) on the Day of Resurrection (saying): ‘O son of Adam (humankind), I was sick but you did not visit Me.’ The person will say: ‘O my Lord, how could I visit Thee when Thou art the Lord of the worlds?’ Thereupon (God) will say: ‘Didn’t you know that a servant of Mine was sick but you did not visit him, and were you not aware that if you had visited him, you would have found Me by him?’ (Read More)
