Hug The Panic Away

Hello Pistachios,

Let’s talk about panic disorders and anxiety. I, in no way claim to be an expert on the subject, so don’t take my word as gospel– not that I expect any of you would. But I have had my fair share of panic and anxiety attacks in the past. And they are the worst. Anyone who has ever had a panic attack will probably say the same.

The difficult part about it, is that often there is little logic behind a panic attack. Sometimes the triggers are seemingly tiny incidents and other times they are not so tiny. Regardless the panic, anxiety and difficulty of the situation are very real.

Recently, I witnessed a couple of people having panic attacks and it’s a whole other world being on the flip side of it. Because I know what it feels like to not be able to breathe, feel like the world is ending, screaming, crying, the inability to form sentences and describe how you’re really feeling, coupled with the inexplicable hardship of it all, I knew what not to do.

So, I knew not to yell at the person having the attack. I knew not to tell them to calm down. I knew not to hang up on them or slam a door on them. I knew not to shame them or guilt them. I knew not to laugh at them or call them names.

But the issue is, I didn’t know what TO DO. I know in the past, when I have had my anxiety attacks that very little made me feel better. I could tell you what made me feel worse, but I also couldn’t tell you what made me feel better. I feel as though there is very little comfort you can give someone experiencing a panic or anxiety attack, other than listening. And after listening to someone you care about in such pain, your instinct is to say everything will be alright, but the fact of the matter is, when you are under attack by your nerves and anxiety, it doesn’t feel like everything will be ok. And telling someone everything will be alright is belittling, patronizing and silly because you don’t know if everything will be alright. We have no way of knowing what to expect tomorrow.

My panic attacks were very embarrassing for me, which only made the panic worse. I knew to let it go as soon at the attack passed and let the person get on with their day.

I’ve learned to listen and let it pass, but I really do wish there was more I could do. I wish I could hug the person and take all the panic away.

If only…

Peace and Pistachios,

Heba

Want to support Palestinian freedom, justice and equality?

Join #IsraeliApartheidWeek 2016

Each year, Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) takes place in more than 150 universities and cities across the world. With creative education and action, IAW aims to raise awareness about Israel’s regime of occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid over the Palestinian people and build support for the nonviolent Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In response to the impressive growth of BDS in the last few years, Israel and its right-wing allies in the west have launched repressive, anti-democratic attacks on the movement and the right to boycott, instead of fulfilling their obligations to end Israel’s violations of international law. This makes this year’s #IsraeliApartheidWeek more crucial than ever.

Support Palestinian popular resistance to oppression–join IAW 2016.

Check out apartheidweek.org and #IsraeliApartheidWeek to find out what’s happening in your area. More events in different cities are being added all the time, so do check back if there’s nothing in your city listed yet.

UMAA Condemns Worldwide Terror Attacks

(WASHINGTON DC –- November 16, 2015) UMAA condemns the attacks against innocent civilians in Paris, France; Beirut, Lebanon; Baghdad, Iraq; and Ghazni, Afghanistan.

The Universal Muslim Association of America wishes to convey our deepest condolences to the victims and the families of the victims affected by all these tragedies.  No one should have to fear walking the streets of their neighborhoods, attending the funeral of their kinfolk or practicing their religion.  In the strongest way possible, we condemn all these acts of terror and we stand united against those who wish to sow fear and hatred amongst humanity.  We recognize that their goals are not just to terrorize but to divide people; to turn friend against friend and neighbor against neighbor.

We call upon the global community to not just denounce and condemn these acts but stand vigilant against their ultimate goal – to divide the world through fear and hatred.

We pray that the victims of these atrocities find peace and that the scourge of the Daesh terrorists realize that the human capacity of love will always be greater than their methodology of hate.

Some Thoughts

The terrorist attacks in Paris are really sick and sad. My heart goes out to all those families and friends who are waiting to hear from their loved ones and especially those who won’t hear from their loved ones. May they rest in eternal peace.

I do need to address why we get more worked up about white people or people in “The West” dying than people of color, all over the rest of the world, dying.

Look at all the madness and uproar on Twitter and Tumblr  for Paris (And rightfully so) and take for instance the past few weeks in the Middle East, particularly the last 24-48 hours, have been hell. Multiple terrorist attacks in Lebanon and Iraq, I believe all claimed by ISIS. And very little in comparison was and has been mentioned about Lebanon and Iraq.

I believe the Paris attacks are also being claimed by ISIS, or at least that is what I have heard as of now. And in light of the Paris attacks all these racist Islamophobes come out and rant their ignorant mouths.  You know ISIS and other terrorists have killed thousands of Muslims in the past few years? And that the attacks in Lebanon and Iraq targeted both Muslims and non-Muslim Middle Easterners alike? Additionally, Paris has a high Muslim and Arab population. Who is to know how many Muslims and Arabs were injured or murdered in the Paris attacks.

What I’m trying to say is there’s no reason for the Islamophobia, because we’re all on the same side here. We’re all under threat by ISIS and other terrorists. We’re all against terrorism and violence. Who these psycho extremists are is beyond me, but they’re not the large majority of Arabs and Muslims. And the Arab and Muslim community continually condemns the violence and yet we are still bombarded with hate.

My fear is that the innocent refugees fleeing the violent terroristic regime of Bashar al-Assad, ISIS, the Taliban, Al Qaeda, etc., will pay the price for the horrible and violent few who threaten us all. I fear reprisal attacks and an unending cycle of violence.

There are too many uneducated people full of hate in this world. And all I want is to keep everyone safe and wrapped in a warm and loving blanket of puppies and kittens.

This week, we’ve been emailing you about the great success of the Affordable Care Act.

That’s why we’re furious to get this breaking news alert: The Supreme Court just agreed to hear ANOTHER challenge to Obamacare.

This will be the FOURTH time in FIVE years that the Supreme Court has heard a challenge to the law.

Enough is enough. It’s critical that Democrats stand behind President Obama and Obamacare right now.

Breaking: U.S. Supreme Court agrees to hear cases attacking birth control coverage (again) — and women’s health is at risk!

Remember Burwell v. Hobby Lobby?

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that some bosses can deny their employees coverage for birth control. It was a deeply troubling ruling that undermined women’s health and took our country backward.

Well, it’s time for another round in this fight!

That’s right. The Court just announced it will hear seven consolidated cases, again attacking birth control and putting access to contraceptive coverage at risk for even more women.

And it’s a painful reminder that women’s reproductive health care is under siege in this country.

That’s why the National Partnership is launching the new Women’s Defense Fund — so we can stand up, speak out and fight back — and I urge you to become a charter supporter by donating $5, $50 or even $500 today!

Extremists are launching relentless and dangerous attacks on women’s access to reproductive health care … in the courts, in Congress and in the states.

The threats are very real — and really dangerous. Over the next weeks and months, we expect …

  • A case from Texas headed to the Supreme Court, with the fate of many reproductive health clinics hanging in the balance,
  • A surge of abortion restrictions in the states,
  • More congressional committees conducting baseless investigations of abortion providers, and
  • Extremists plotting to defund Planned Parenthood.

The National Partnership is on the frontlines of these fights, but we need your support. Big time.

That’s why we are launching our new Women’s Defense Fund. And that’s why we’re sounding the alarm for all our supporters and donors.

Please chip in $5, $50 or even $500 to ensure we have the resources necessary to defend women’s health and rights from these attacks. Every single dollar will be put to very good use right away!

Together, we will stop extremists from eroding our rights and erasing our hard-fought gains.

Thank you for standing with us during this critical time!

Sincerely,

Debra Ness

Popular Palestinian resistance against Israeli oppression enters its second month

#SolidarityWaveBDS

Since the start of October, Palestinians have been taking part in mass popular resistance against Israeli settler colonialism and apartheid.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of people joined a huge demonstration in al-Khalil (Hebron) and similarly large demonstrations took place in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem and across Palestine. Palestinians continue to take mass action on an almost daily basis in cities, towns and villages throughout historic Palestine.

This uprising is led by a generation of fearless young Palestinian Davids who are no longer intimidated by the brutality of the Israeli Goliath and who are asserting their right to self-determination and freedom. It comes as a response to the escalation of Israel’s criminal attacks on and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

Israel’s repression of this ongoing uprising has been brutal. Israel has killed 74 Palestinians, mostly unarmed protesters and bystanders, including 15 children and a pregnant woman. More than 2,000 civilians have been shot with live and rubber coated bullets. More than 1,350 Palestinians have been arrested.

See our full update for a selection of photos and updates about the ongoing popular resistance.

Take action in solidarity with the Palestinian popular resistance:

  • Share our photos and update about the ongoing protests in Palestine and the mapping of resistance by our member organisation Stop the Wall.
  • Organise a protest or visually exciting, creative action in solidarity with Palestinian popular struggle. Take steps to ensure your actions are covered in the media and shared through social media. Please use the #SolidarityWaveBDS hashtag.
  • Read and share our Q&A on the ongoing popular resistance to try to counter some of the falsehoods and bias circulating in the media.
  • Read and share our briefing on how international military ties help Israel to repress Palestinian resistance.
